URBAN EARTH

ABOUT
URBAN EARTH is a project to (re)present some of the largest urban areas on our planet by walking across them. The length of the walk roughly reflects the size of the urban area while the route attempts to mirror the distribution of (multiple) deprivation within it. Where the 20% most deprived members of the urban population occupy 30% of the urban footprint, 30% of the walk will go through these kinds of areas.

The URBAN EARTH route across (part of) the West Yorkshire Urban Area. The colours show the pattern of multiple deprivation, red reveals the most deprived areas while the green are least deprived.

At its heart URBAN EARTH is about questioning what life is like for people who live in our cities. It's about claiming and enjoying the right to explore and discuss the nature of human habitat. Joining an URBAN EARTH walk means challenging the way the media (re)presents urban areas and discovering what is between the places we feel we know.

EVENTS
URBAN EVENT: CANTERBURY is the next planned event. More details in the events section of our Ning.

Passed events have included walks across the West Yorkshire Urban Area, Tyneside, Bristol, London, Greater Manchester, Mumbai, Mexico City, Theis and Guadalajarta.

CREATE AN EVENT
If you can't make one of the coming events do organise and share one here. If you're not sure about plotting an URBAN EARTH route, URBAN STORIES are easy to map. While URBAN EARTH walks attempt to reflect the distribution of deprivation within an urban area, an URBAN STORY walk attempts to stay within one particular profile of area. If you need any help, just get in touch.

Geographies of Colonial and Postcolonial spaces: Research Paper

(Re)presenting the postcolonial city: Urban Earth Mumbai

Introduction

Visual technologies, in particular photography, play a crucial role in constructing geographical imaginations and shaping our perceptions of place (Schwartz and Ryan, 2003), yet have also often been deeply implicated in colonial power relations (Ryan, 2003). This essay will analyse a novel of mode of representing the city – “the visual symbol of postcolonialism… Continue
